These are on their second year in pots. I think I'll put some of them into the ground in autumn. Apparently they like moisture-retentive soil in spring and a dry dormancy - doesn't quite go with our climate but loads of people grow them so maybe I'll put them on a bed of grit so the roots are moist but the bulbs are drained.

thanks wagger. yeh all the plants i want say moisture retardent but well draining soil. Ive yet to come across one that says" likes hard baked clay in summer and soggy heavy in winter"!

these are soooo elegant, ive got to get some. what sort of conditions do they like. ive seen them naturalised in grass, does that mean they need well drained soil?
