Arlene, my guess is that is the remnant of a garage roof. Interesting story, originally building 25 years ago, the landlord put a big garage there by that shed. As soon as the heat was on, an ice lens that the property was sitting on began to melt and this entire area that is sunken was formed as the lens melted away, including the garage capsizing. It was once all just a gentle slope. Expensive but smart to drill checking for ice before building. They were lucky the house was build just above the ice lens or they would have lost it as well. The land of permafrost is very tender indeed.
