I love a purple heuchera beside the spring green of the Alberta Spruce. It's a great combo, Bluespruce. I had two AS but lost one last spring when I refurbished my pond...it had rooted under the pond liner and when I removed it and started digging I killed it...The other is in my front garden and everyspring it loses all the needles on the south side...it is near the street and I'm wondering if it is salt from the sidewalk and street that causes this..? Any opinion on this? I'd appreciate your expert advice. .

Lori, sorry for the late reply. Could be the salt that causes this to happen, another possibility is infestations of spider mites, Alberta spruce are very prone to attacks from these pests, the problem is you can't see them either, so you might consider using a preventative spray in early spring and again a couple of times more in early summer.

Thanks Bluespruce... I will take a magnifier with me and have a good look...It seems to happen all at once... if you touch the tree the needles fall like a Christmas tree that's been in the house too long! Would the mites cause stunting and bud damage?
