Epidendrum Red hybrid - Reed Orchid

Epidendrum Red hybrid - Reed Orchid (Epidendrum Red hybrid - Reed Orchid)

This red orchid was given to me yesterday by my neighbor who has a very large amount of these orchids in every color imaginable. I will take photos soon. They are used as shrubby type hedges.

It's a very nice little flower - would make a colourful hedge.

These are lovely Delonix, I had them in red, orange and maroon, but all seem to have died... :-(

Panther:

Wow! Sorry to hear about your orchids! I would think they would thrive there in Fiji.

They probably need to grow as an epiphyte in Fiji...that's how they grow in nature...on large trees.

Yes Delonix I had them growing as epiphytes on dead tree fern stumps which is common here. I believe I made a mistake in placing them in a spot that had direct sunlight and no shade for too long.

Oh yes, they prefer morning sun and afternoon shade or semi-shade. I've seen these orchids being grown in the full sun here and they usually burn up.

Delonix,
May I ask, are these ones growing in a pot mix... how often do you feed them?

Panther:

Yes, this orhid is growing in a pot. However, my neighbor who gave this plant to me 2 days ago has hundreds in the ground in many colors. She said she just waters them rarely and ocassionally mist them with the hose.

Most orchids take most of thier water from the air...and I assume some of their nutrients from decaying matter. I perosnally would fertilize with orchid food...which is a high bloom formula.

Great...thanks Delonix:-)

Yes, it was very generous of them...I do give lots of plants away also.

This is what this orchid looked like when my neighbor first gave it to me...I counted more than 100 stems when I transplanted them last year.

Well you must be doing some thing good for it to multyply like that.

5 Feb, 2011

Not really...that's how they grow naturally.

So do they need splitting at all or do they like being pot bound.

5 Feb, 2011

Sixpence:

They seem to like being pot-bound...although, they do quite well in the ground too.
