These I believe jacque, are the young of the common garden spider (araneus diadematus) as spiders go I think this is one of our most attractive looking ones. the adult which is generally seen around september has an abdomain that looks like a brain. look at the drawing of this on my page. Tref.

No problem jacque, glad to be of service. My garden wildlife book says that The female spider of this species is about 10-15mm and the male up to 5mm so not really that big. The common garden spider is one of the most distinctive and beautifully marked spiders around the garden, varying in colour from straw yellow to dark woody brown. The legs are stripy and the head is quite pale the abdomen on a standard common garden spider has a beautifully intricate and complex pattern of tan brown, black and white, with the white markings resemling a cross. They are generally found in hedgerows, woodland, heathland and garden shrubs across northan europe. They prey on flying insects such as aphids and small flies, catching them in their delicate webs. During the autumn months the female lays many hundreds of eggs (up to about 800) in one mass and then protects them with a silk binding. After remaining with the eggs for two months or so, the female garden spider dies and will become the first meal of the young spiders when they hatch.
