Cane Begonia Flowering

I never seen them this high what are yu feeding it

I had to laught...this is a very small plant. The cane begonias can grow to at least 15 feet/ 4.6 meters tall...and I've seen them as tall as 30 feet/ 10 meters tall in Central California along the coast.

To answer your question is doesn't receive any fertilizer.

my favourite thing about the cane begonia is the blossom stalks...they are like mini chandeliers! I can believe that in their element they would reach great heights because I had one that grew to about 8 ft. (as a house plant) and once again I did the right thing as I've always been stingy with chemical fertilizer...I prefer to change the compost in the pot! I have a B. boliviensis "bonfire" that I've over wintered...it is just sending up some nice shoots...can't wait... It was really close to freezing last night ...Yes I know!, on the First of JUNE!!! was down to 4 deg. C. brrr... I have it in a little portable greenhouse on the deck...wasn't expecting the extreme dip..so I left it out in the gh. I should check on it ...cluck cluck. lol.

I had a B. boliviensis 'bonfire" for many years...however, it was cooked last November in my back yard during our long heat wave. It was my fault because I moved it from the front yard where it received a lot of shade to the back yard.

Wow! Almost freezing on the first day of June...that's incredibly cold!
I would assume you still need to use your furnace?

Yes, begonia species seem to not like too much fertilizer or the leaf tips burn easily. This plant is only in a gallon pot...if it were in a larger pot, it would be much taller.

Was talking to my cousin who lives in Muskoka in west-Central Ontario...they received snow and hail last Sunday, 3lst. May! We were fortunate on the other side of the province...we had very strong cold winds...but lucky for us no precip! I'm happy to report that my seedlings seem ok...that little greenhouse is a marvelous thing! I'm not going to start the Jacaranda until I'm sure we aren't going to have any more extreme cold...put the b.b.bonfire out there as well...it's doing fine too! I find that up here the bbb can take a lot more direct sun...infact the amount of blossom increased when I put it out on the deck..but the rest of the summer it was hung from the lower branches of the Amur Maple!

Wow! Is this normal weather for this time of year? or very unusual?

We had extremely unusual electrical storms this morning and it may continue over parts of San Diego County until early this afternoon.(I heard on the news this may not have happened for 50 years) It's actually unheard of to have this kind of weather at this time of the year. Many people from the beaches went running for cover because of the lightning and hail...it make the top breaking news story on T.V.

Snow and heavy rains are forcast for the Calgary area today....June 6th!! I think its weird weather everywhere these days.

WOW! That's unbelievable! Snow and rain at this time of the year!! Is this the first time this is known to happen at this time of year?

The last 4 days the weather has been partly cloudy and cooler than normal. 4 people were struck by lightning last Tues, Wed...and several fires were started throughout Southern California.

We may possibly get some showers today -- which we need so badly! We are on very strict mandatory water rationing. In San Diego, we can only water outside 3 times a week for only 10 minutes. Personally, I don't know how this is going to work for most people. It is not a very good situation at all. : > (

Last weekend, me and the kids were slap-bang in the middle of Scotland. It was, here in the Uk, the warmest spot at 31 degreesC! The children had their Factor 50 sun screen on. I read in yesterday's news that the ski slopes are now crowded, and every garden boasts a snowman!! So glad that we got the trip when we did (although, I suspect, the kids wouldn't have complained, either way). :-)

PS. And this is only a 90 mins drive!! I, also, have a cane begonia, a variety called "The Wiz" (from a previous themed Wizard of Oz garden). It took some time, but is growing so well now that, some nights, when I get home from work, it has leaned so far to the light that the plant, and planter, has tipped onto its side towards the light through the window.

It is about the same time, 90 minutes to our local moutains...however, when it does snow (usually in January) at 6000 feet / 1825 meters elevation, the snow only lasts a couple of days then it melts...and this only happens about 3 times in winter.

I've never heard of the Begonia variety 'The Wiz'. Did you name it?

I don't know if it is the first time this has happened Delonix but snow in June is certainly out of the ordinary. Poor Murray had to go to Calgary over the weekend so had to deal with the rotten weather.

4 people struck by lightening? Were they all together or was this 4 seprate strikes?

No, I didn't name it. Last year, I bought 6 begonias with wizard of Oz names from a nursery in England. The grower sent me one called "Dorothy". He told me that a friend in the USA had sent him one plant, and that I now had the only other one in the UK. I suspect that the "Oz" varieties all originated in the US. All are doing fine. I've just noticed that my "Wiz" cane one has toppled over again, so am going to re-pot in a heavier pot, and relocate it somewhere else in the house.

That just amazes me...that you would receive snow in June....however, in the Sierra Mountains in California they had snow a couple of days ago above 9,000 feet/ 2750 meters elevation...which is pretty unusual also.

The lighning strkes where 3 separate incidents...1 incident was two brothers that were working outside as landscapers in Northern San Diego County...one of the brothers is fine the other is in a coma.

Thanks for the information...I'll have to google this variety to see what the plant looks like.

If I have a top heavy plant in a small pot outside...I usually put rocks on the soil to prevent it from tipping over...or I'll just plant it in the ground. Will these cane Begonia varieties grow in the ground for you?
