Papaver orientale 'Pink Ruffles' (Papaver orientale 'Pink Ruffles')

Planted this last year, when it only had one flower. It must be happy, because this year there are about 30 buds!!!

I am a great fan of Oriental poppies..this one is stunning...love the ruffles...they want so much for a plant..the seeds are so easy to collect..I have planted seeds here over the years that I have gathered from one year to the next..have not a one right now...though.

Thanks for the nice comments - it's a bit of a stunner!

Cat - do these come true from seed? Or do you get some interesting variation maybe? I know these can be grown easily from root cuttings otherwise. But they produce so much seed!

I have never grown a papaver from root cuttings...hmm..perhaps this variation does best with that...the poppies I have grown from seed are the opium poppies..they were brought here by the Chinese over 400 years ago..they do well if you collect their seed in the fall and save them until the first frost of winter..I prepare an
area before the first frost and then on the morning of the first frost while it is still white from frost, I sprinkle the seeds over the prepared ground...and that is it..in the spring they take off and I have a nice happy patch of oriental poppies....

Ah, I see - these are not opium poppoes (I have those too). Same genus, difference species. You wouldn't be able to prop opium pops from root cuttings coz they're annuals. Papaver orientale is perennial. Think I'll have a go at doing some root cuttings - can't have enough of these lol

My mother always grew the root cutting ones..she loved them.
