Squirrel-corn

By Diohio

Squirrel-corn (Dicentra canadensis (Squirrel-corn))

Squirrel-corn grows wild in our back ravine in the same area as the Dutchman's Breeches. It is very similar to Dutchman's Breeches only the flowers are heart-shaped. It is very closely related to Bleeding Hearts. It's common name comes from the yellowish root nodules which squirrels often dig up for food. Foliage of this wildflower are exactly the same as Dutchman's Breeches. April 17
