OK. Hands up, who knows what a sappho is?

Don't know what a sappho is, but there was a Greek poet called Sappho, I guess it was named after her

You are such a tease Andrew. I too thought that it was named after the female poet. This plant turned up around in the mid 19th century but at that time the poet was considered one not to be discussed in polite society as her home was on Lesbos, hence conotations with female sexuality(if Im allowed to use that word on a garden web site!)

OK, here's the answer (and what a great 'Trivial Pursuit' question this would have been).
Sappho was the nickname given to the headmistress of a private girls' school in Victorian times

Hi Rohima, wished I could help you here but I took this pic at Beth Chatto's garden in Essex. Having said that I think I saw 'Sappho' at Wyvale Garden Centre this week worth a look! Good luck!
