For Delonix - Dalechampia seems to have settled in

Is it in the ground or in a pot in your courtyard ?
Is it shaded or open ?

Actually Louise I couldn't find out much about it on the internet - Delonix and Bjs gave me the most information. It's a climber and at the moment it's in a pot on my courtyard. It's out in the open (it's been out all through autumn and now into winter) but our summers are quite harsh so I will have to see how it goes then. These purple bits are bracts and feel quite silky (hence it's name Silk Crepe Flower) - but the flowers are those tiny little pink bumps you can see in the middle.

I looked it up in my RHS encyclopeadia and .... nothing.
However, if you look at www.smgrowers.com you'll find out quite a bit about it.
It's the Euphorbiaceae (Spurge) family, where it's the fastest growing vine.

The website Louise1 provided is for San Marcos Growers which is located in Santa Barbara in Southern California...that's where many of our local nurseries receive their plant stock from in California. I may have to give them a call soon. I'll post what I find out about this vine.

I called San Marcos Growers in Santa Barbara today. They grow 3 species of Dalechampia. I found out that they supply 2 of the 3 species to my favorite local nursery here in San Diego. (that's where I've seen this vine before. lol)

The additional information I obtained from San Marcos Growers is: This vine grows very quickly and bloom most of the year...it also reseeds quite prolifically, which is typical for most plants in the Euphorbiaceae (Spurge) family. It's somewhat drought tolerant once established and grows well in subtropical and tropical climates.

Thanks for all your trouble Delonix - it's sounds as if it will grow here very well. I am rather pleased to find out it flowers for most of the year as I do love these blooms. I still haven't decided where it put it yet - but it's very happy out in the couryard at the moment.

I went to my local nursery where they sell this vine...and spoke with a certified nursery man who had this vine in his yard -- he said it blooms 365 days in his garden. He also said it is one of the easiest vines to grow.

Thanks Blue - I'm still deciding what to do with it. I can't plant it along a fence (just rock) and I don't really have a trellis for it to grow up, so it might have to become a large hanging basket plant.
