Planted wall June 09

I love my little wall. When we moved in it was planted partly with montbretia, which I loved, and partly with ivy. But the ivy started to get out of hand, and the montbretia stopped producing flowers, so about three years ago I ripped everything out and started again, planting four euonymus shrubs, which have really taken off. I fill the gaps with seasonal things to provide a bit of variety and colour. This is the first year I've tried Bowles Mauve wallflowers in the wall and am wondering if they will survive the winter. I had one of these a few years ago in the back border that flowered constantly for about three years, even through the winter and on Christmas Day before dying off. I wonder if these will do the same?

Pretty planting..
Difficult to know what will survive the winter...
Your garden looks quite sheltered...

Thank you for your nice comments, I'm just going to wait and see about the wallflowers. I don't really mind if they don't survive the winter as I do like to plant the wall with seasonal colour so it's not really a problem.

Perennial wallflowers are renowned for flowering themselves to death but are easy from cuttings.

Sadly I've now removed these wallflowers as the foliage was looking awful, although they were still flowering well. I've planted some marguerites instead. I didn't think to take cuttings. In fact I've never taken cuttings, I'm nervous of doing it, not sure why!

It doesn't hurt the plants at all, even makes them bush out better. The worst thing that can happen is that they don't 'take' - but then you can try again. Go on, give it a go. There's a very comprehensive guide to taking cuttings at; http://www.letsgogardening.co.uk/Information/Cuttings.htm

Thanks Wagger, I'll have a look at that site in a minute. Perhaps I might be persuaded to take a few cuttings and give it a go!
