Parrot

This is Big Poll, one of my Amazon Parrots. We can account for over 50 years of her life. I love her to bits, she is very ill now, the Vet cannot do anything, she is just closing down with age. She cannot eat any seeds etc., as her digestive system has closed down and I have to cook anything I think will tempt her, but the last week she hasn't eaten enough to keep a Sparrow alive. She sleeps for 99.9% of the day and it is only time and it is tearing me apart. All I can is to watch and wait.

Thank you all so much. Each morning I come down and expect to find her gone and still she carries on. When it gets to the time she can't perch, then I know it is time to let her go

How is Poll this morning ? :o)

The same thank you. She never even went to her food dish yesterday, she opened her eyes when I took her cover off this morning, but then tucked her head in her back and hasn't moved since. I gave her her morning tickle and back to sleep she went. All she ate yesterday was a tiny bit of biscuit. She is not in pain, just sleeping away. It's so hard for me to watch, I know you understand having to treat Conker as you do. I have two more Amazons, Little Poll and Mabel, they are in their late 40's and so far they are OK.

I do understand. I nursed my elderly Welsh Terrier for several months last autumn, You can see his photos on GoY. Good to know that Poll is not in pain.
She knows you are close by. Having your company is the most important thing of all..... xxx

Thanks TT. I guess when you love, your whole heart hurts to see them unwell or to lose them. Poll in the only one of my big Parrots to have had a good life and been loved for all of it. My other two haven't been so lucky. I just want her to go peacefully if possible.

Yes, wishing Poll a peaceful last few days....xxx

Thank you, I managed to get her to eat a tiny piece of apple and a very small piece of cheese on toast, but not enough to really help her...xxx

So very sorry...hoping her last few days are peaceful. We all love our pets so much and think all hope they go in their sleep with no pain. She has had 50 happy years with you and hope you can take comfort from that.

I try to, at least she has been one of the lucky one and had a good life. So many of those I have here have been so abused. Thank you.

We have a 10 year old African Grey called Mary. She is so funny...always cheers us up,especially when she imitates the telephone, then laughs crazily when we go to answer it.She can talk for England too !

Oh bless her. I have rescued 3 Greys and two live with friend of mine who is Greys mad LOL. One of them had been so badly treated, she died, which was so unnnecessary. I have over 60 birds here, most of them are mine, but 7 are fosters from BirdLine.

You are doing a brilliant thing to help these poor birds,Pamazon......

I love all animals, but birds are the big love of my life, I had to do something to try and help, the same with any animal, if they are brought to me, I will move heaven and earth to try and help. They don't have a voice of their own, do they?

No,and in this day and age they need all the help they can get.Just a little story.A friend of ours who runs an animal rescue centre was once brought a nest of baby mice by someone who had inadvertently "disposed of" the parents. There were 10 naked blind babies. She fed them every 2 hours for 3 days and successfully reared 8 of them.Someone asked her why she bothered and she said "because they are alive" .Says it all.

Doesn't it just, what a lovely person she is. I have just been upstairs to check on my birds before bed as I always do and found one of my Cockatiels on the floor, I picked him up and he bit my thumb and died. He was beautiful, a Lutino I called Lucky as he was brought to me found in the street. He was fine this afternoon when I sprayed them all and now he is gone. I can never understand it, it doesn't seem fair somehow, but that is how it goes with birds, they are fragile really.

Dont worry...if he bit you before he died...he was probably thanking you !
