Asphodeline lutea seedpods

Asphodeline lutea seedpods (Asphodeline lutea (King's Spear))

I love the seedpods on these - they remind of shiney green marbles. There are some blackfly on them, but there are also quite a few ladybirds, so no need to frett :-)

Fascinating, I've not heard of these before. Love the little ladybird.

Thanks Sid, I have just taken a look. Very pretty and unusual plants. What sort of conditions do they like?

Hi Gee - they are mediterannian-type plants, so they do well in full sun and with relatively poor and well drained soil. They're good in gravel gardens as they like a relatively open position (ie not cramed in amoungst other plants). Slugs can be a bit of a pest in the spring when the fresh new growth is coming through. They are easy from seed, but will not flower until their second or third year - I can send you some seed if you like?

I would love to give them a try, Sid, but I think my garden is probably too wet for them. I have a gravel bed but it is just a narrow strip so probably not open enough for them. Would it do well in a pot or am I clutching at straws?

That's a pity - wet is a complete no-no for these plants. I'm not sure about a pot....maybe a really big one (they grow to about 3ft tall when in flower and my 'clump' is about 2 ft across).

I think I will have to leave these to those with drier gardens then, Sid, but thanks very much for the offer. They are fascinating plants.

What else?

See who else is growing Asphodeline lutea (King's Spear).

See who else has plants in genus Asphodeline.
