Dicentra macrocarpnos

A scrambler with wiry stems and tendrils reaching ten feet in a sheltered spot. D.scandens is similar but flowers earlier and is hardier

Hi Andrew - another GoYer has sent me some seed of this plant. She says it needs 4 weeks cold strat. Do you have any advice you'd like to impart?! I can't find a thing about how to grow it on the internet...

Sid - this is very similar to dicentra scandens so anything on that one should also apply. D.microcarpnos is leess hardy though so don't give it an exposed spot. Mine is planted in heavy clay - took a year or three to get going but is now almost too rampant. Good luck

Hi Andrew - sorry, it's actually D scandens I've got seeds for. Do you know anything about it as I've not been able to find much info on it for some reason. Not sure how deep to sow. From what I have found, it seems it just wants sowing and then left in a cold greenhouse or coldframe, but that just seems a bit too easy!! Thanks, Sarah.

The only thing I read about this says it prefers a moist soil to a dry one so I'm going to suggest you don't sow too near the surface. Having said that, if it's very small seed, it's not going to have much strength to push a shoot through lots of soil. My 'bible' says to sow in autumn or spring and put the container in a greenhouse or coldframe - which makes it sound quite easy to grow!

Yes, that's what I found re sow in spring in coldframe or greenhouse - does sound easy doesn't it......nothing tells me about how deep to sow tho. Your advice to not surface sow sounds sensible... Maybe I should sow half the seed at, say, 5mm depth and the rest on the surface. The seed is small, but not minute. Fingers crossed! Thanks for your input!
