Betula u. var. jacquemontii (multi-stemmed)

This photograph was taken today between showers. In the distance there's one of the silver birch (multi-stemmed Betula u. var. jacquemontii) We bought three of them last month from the Dingle Nursery in Welshpool. The stems weren't too heavy but the root ball was! They were each about one and a half hundredweight (168 pounds). In the garden we frequently contrast red, blue and yellow. However, we are now introducing white in the shady areas of our lower garden (white never seems to look right in our sunny upper garden.)

The Acer Senkaki really earns its keep all year round - especially in the winter with its red stems

I used to get supplies from Dingle Nursery in Welshpool when I was 'in the trade' - Used to be good - suppose it still is! B. jacquemontii gets pretty big - are you planning to prune them down when they get too big?

Thanks for the warning. We've already trimmed some of the smaller lower branches off - so perhaps we'll trim a few more! We do tend to be quite ruthless with our pruning. We often say that the garden is like a pack of wolves - trying to get the better of us. But, for the time being, we like to think we are in control (which probably isn't really true!)

Betulas are one of my favourite trees. I've got 3 Betula pendula. Sadly most of my garden is hot, sunny and dry, in Summer, and they struggled last year.
