Bauhinia galpinii - Red Orchid Bush

This Red Orchid bush is just starting to bloom. It is a commonly grown sprawling shrub which blooms during Summer through late Fall.

We have these, but in purple... actually the flowers come in dark and light purple, side by side in same tree.

This species is a sprawling shrub. Bauhinia purpurea or variegata are large trees which have purple flowers. They are extremely common here lining many street. Bauhinia forficata - Small White Orchid tree is just starting to bloom now. The larger Bauhinia alba - White Orchid tree has already bloomed in late Winter and early Spring.
I think we grow about 20 species of Bauhinia in Southern California.
