What I've been doing this weekend........

What I've been doing this weekend........

I decided the border at the end of the garden needed some rejuvination so I cut back the berberis in the centre and have put Clematis Arabella to the side, hopefully she'll scramble through this. The sun dial is a recent purchase and I've planted a yellow rose, China Town in front. As the berberis is so much smaller now I've moved a Mahonia back a bit to gain more space at the front. I've also planted another clematis montana Broughton Star behind the flowering currant to the left of the border and two verbena bornariensis on either side of the berberis. Also in the border is a relatively new variagate weigela (on the left) and a buddleia (on the right). With any luck, they'll all be exceedingly happy in their new home and flower their little socks off!!

Thanks Pansypotter. I'm a demon with the secateurs - ha ha! It rained earlier so I wasn't sure if I'd manage to get it finished today. Digging the hole for the rose was a bit of an exercise though. Despite the rain the soil was bone dry and brick hard about 4/5 inches down. I've got clay soil here and boy does it need help! Needed hubby for that one.

The sun dial was a bit of a carry on as well. When we got the directions right, the time was wrong and when we got the time right, the directions on it were wrong. 7pm at night here when we set it in place the other day but it showed up as 3.30 - as hubby said, "It'll be 3.30 somewhere!" I think we need the compass for that one.

Sounds as you really having fun getting your timings right, as long as it looks good why worry! Talking about clay you could make pots with mine! not the easiest soil to plant in!

You're right about the sun dial. I thought that as well when I was deciding where to put it. Given the amount of sun we get it could go anywhere! It's a nice feature though and the beauty of it is, it's resin and not stone so I can move it around if I feel like it!!

I thought your sun dial was stone, its very realistic and as you say much easier to move around!

As long as it looks the part, I'm quite happy!

You've certainly done a fair amount of work there. Hope you managed to sort out the timings on your sundial.

Hi Silverbelle, I wasn't happy with that area at all but it's coming together now and yes, I'm sure we'll get to grips with the sundial. I'm pleased you like it.

I much prefer gardens in progress. I'm not one for manicured lawns and perfect flower beds in standard gardens, it's like going into a 'show house' ~ and not knowing where to sit without making an impression in the cushions. lol. You've got it just right for me, Keithsmum. Your garden is lovely.

Awe Silverbelle, thank you! I got rid of the grass when the borders got bigger! We had a squelchy area that was avoided and the gravel has solved that problem.

You're welcome. We got rid of all our grass a couple of years ago, when it rained it was like walking on a sponge!!!! Our house is built on what was a pond and the soil was mostly clay ~ we've dug up tons from the flowerbeds and replaced it with topsoil. So that helped to solve our problem.

We're clay as well. It can be a devil to dig!!
