Dalechampia dioscoreifolia ~ Purple Wings, Costa Rican Butterfly Vine (Dalechampia dioscoreifolia ~ Purple Wings, Costa Rican Butterfly Vine)

This vine was located at one of my favorite nurseries in La Costa, Northern San Diego County. For my GoY friend Bernieh in Australia.

Ah ha - looks familiar. Thanks Andy - wow that is a decent size. I wonder what the difference is between this and the aristolochifolia that I have?

Bernieh:

Yes, they had two 5 gallon nice plants for $40.00 ea...it was more than I wanted to spend for this plant. I'm sure I'll find it in a gallon pot for a lot less soon enough.

I think this species and aristolochiafolia are synonums...although, not positive. This species had leaves like Aristolochia. Aristolochiafolia means: Aristolochia-like-leaves.

Wow - that's a big plant for a big price. Mine was a lot smaller and the price a lot less - but it hasn't appeared in the nursery since so I think I got very lucky. Thanks for the info on the name - I think you're right about it being a synonym because they look exactly the same. Hope the price comes down for you!

Bernieh:

You lucked out with purchasing this vine...it seems like an uncommon plant there.

The posted vines were about 6 feet / 2 meter tall including the pot. This nursery is in the high-rent district...many multi-million dollar homes in the area...most of their plants are on the high-priced side...however, very healthy. I can buy this plant at my local nursery when they get them in stock for $9.00 in a gallon container...I'll wait. : > )

Yes, I do agree this species is a synonym (I actually spelled it correctly this time. lol). There's still very little information on this vine available on the internet. Luckily this vine is commercially grown in nurseries in Southern California. I'll post more information as I obtain it in the future.

Wow obviously the customers at La Costa like their plants large and pricey! Any info you find out would be much appreciated - as you say there's really nothing on the net. (Sorry the teacher in me won't let me make spelling mistakes - painful!)

Bernieh:

There's definitely a lot of money in this neighborhood.

Well, now I'm really going to have to review my
spelling before posting my comments. LOL!
Writing is not my forte.

Ha - don't worry about it Delonix. Remembering how to spell some plant names can be quite a challenge - I've improved immensely since joining this site!

Bernieh:

You do an excellend job at spelling the bonanical names. It can be a challenge for some people.

It's really funny...I forget sometimes how to spell the simple words...however, rarely forget how to spell the botanical names of plants which are in my head
like an encyclopedia. I guess it's because I've studied latin...it helps anyway.
