This is a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers that live in the back woods. Pilieated Woodpeckers are our largest woodpecker, and they're the woodpecker that the cartoon character "Woody Woodpecker" was made after. They are very shy so getting good shots of them is always exciting. When they call to each other as they soar through the woods, it makes one feel like you are listening to something in the Amazon Rainforest. This bird is simply spectacular !

We have green and great spotted woodpeckers in our woodland, but you are so lucky to have so many wonderful species so close by. Fabulous photos.

I'll add that this tree is only about 12 feet from our front door ! On the other side of the tree that you see is a tree that we cut down because it was dying, and starting to rot out (the 2 trees grew side-by-side). We left a good 10 feet at the bottom when we cut it so the birds could have good pickins ! It was full of ants.
