Lori:
Thanks for the comment!
I can grow Anthuriums outside, however, they must be planted in shade or
they will burn.
No we haven't had a drop of rain in months...maybe by November we may
get some.

I'm such a waterbaby...I don't know how you can stand to live with drought? Does it have psychological effects?...you mentioned some of the winds that cycle thro the year in San Diego...the Santa Ana's??? hot and dry?
...I was born and raised beside a large lake...and enjoyed it every day of my life there...summer swimming, winter skating...learned to swim very early in life!! Been part fish ever since!!

Lori:
Living in California unfortunately we live with drought every couple of years...it's just part of our normal cycle.
We do have several lakes here even though they are low now. A large percentage of culture here revolves around the beach...as people here surf, body surf, boggie board, swim and do many other water activities all year. Boating and sailing are big here also. We have a lot of water it's just Pacific Ocean water.
The majority of people who live here in San Diego have swimming pools...since one can swim all year here...especially if the pool is heated during the winter.
The Santa Ana Winds start as early as late Sept. and happen anytime through the middle of May. The peak is generally from Oct through March...and yes, these winds are very hot and dry. Fall and Winter are very volatile months as far as the Santa Wind firestorms are concerned.

Wind fire storms...that sounds extremely unpleasant. recently (wiithin the last year) saw pics of the fires in Australia and how they race thro bush and town alike... it must be a fearsome sight. I've experienced being within a few miles of some of the lightening engendered forest fires that cull the forests here in the north. We have storms that have no rain, just lightening, and the strikes start fires in the bushland. We've had a lot of rain this year..but now we are having tornadoes. We are not used to those, either!!

Lori:
Yes, our 'Firestorms' are very severe hear...if you want to read about them they are on the internet. The huge firestorms of 2003 and 2007 are some of the worst! During the firestorm of 2003 virtually half the county of San Diego was burning...it was horrid! They were cause by the Santa Ana Winds. Many thousands of homes and structures burned...and billions of dollars in damage...and very unfortunately many people died also.
I've seen on the T.V. News the severe thunderstorms and tornados hitting Canada yesterday. It must be very frightening to see tornados coming towards your house or even having the warnings.
