The flowers had white, yellow, red and brown in them - certainly facinating to look at.....

Thanks Janey - I'm really pleased with them - especially as I was a complete beginner with orchids! I must say, there are two in the greenhouse that are looking very sad tho....I don't think I can maintain a high enough temperature for them unfortunately. Never mind tho, as they were 'bargains' anyway and were not very good when I bought them - I just took a chance.

Well you win some and you lose some....I don't mention all the plants that die on me!!! lol

It could well be an Oncidium hybrid along the lines of the Cambrias in my garden pictures.
For a lot of flowers, the Oncidium hybrids seem to take a lot of beating from what I've found out so far.
Another plus if I am correct about its gene line is that they were bred to be tolerant of cool to intermediate conditions.

Thanks for that Meanie - yes, I did notice your pictures and thought they looked similar. The lable did say Oncidium so I was expecting lots of yellow flowers. This is better I think! Interesting that it might have been bred for cooler conditions. It was in the living room while in flower, then I moved it into the greenhouse for a 'holiday', but I moved it up into my bedroom recently in case it got too cold for it and I just noticed yesterday that it is already producing another flower spike! It looks really healthy - very pleased!

BTW I'm still keeping an eye on those Eccremocarpus seed pods for you!

Checked the Orchid Geeks site - they speak their own language don't they! I also looked at the culture sheet, but I thought it was a bit vague. However, I seem to be doing something right with this one as it has a new flw spike emerging and has quite a lot of new growth. I just water it with rainwater and feed as and when I do my Phals. One problem I had with it initially was that the flw spikes didn't seem to unfurl themselves properly and remained coiled up and the flowers consequently opened too low down in the plant, but I now think that was due to insufficient watering. I watered more after that and subsequent flw spikes were taller and straighter.

Burrageara Stefan Isler is a beauty - if it's as easy as the Oncid/hybrid/whatever then I wounldn't mind one bit if I got one of those for Xmas.... ;-)
