I'm very lucky here - I'd never seen a snail in any of my gardens until I moved out here. Again, luckily they're few and far between - they only really show up here in the 'wet' season which we haven't had many of for years and years.

Bernieh:

Yes, you're so lucky! We've got thousands...and I'm not kidding. In Winter, when it rains they come out in armies. lol! They can eat certain plants completely leafless in a couple of nights. I have to use a lot of snail and slug bait in the winter.

Sounds awful! I think the most snails I've seen here was a group of 4!!!

Bernieh:

You have not idea. LOL! Snails are the number one pest problem in California gardens.

well i learn something everyday....i never thought u would have problems with snails...Delonix...i just thought they would not like your climate...
Bernieh they are beastly here along with the slugs.....we had rain last night and the little buggers will be all over the place today....

I was thinking the same as you Sandra - didn't know snails were such a problem in California!! As for slugs - don't see those here either.

you are lucky Bernieh

they are a pain here...especialy when i grow from seed..the little buggers can wipe out a seed tray overnight...

I can see I am rather lucky after being on this site for a few months - I really don't get many pests. Mostly get aphids - however, during the summer the huge grasshoppers can cause devastation.

Sandra:

We have 3 major types of snails. The common brown African snail which is made into L'escargot...a larger African snail which isn't so common. The last snail is a good snail which eats the common brown snail...it looks like a water snail with a long, thin shell...however, there's not enough to eat the common snail.

Bernieh:

One night I killed 100 snails in a small section of my yard. When I put a lot of snail bait out - a couple of days later there's snail graveyards all around the yard.

Amazing - they obviously don't mind your climate.

Bernieh:

Yes, they love it here. LOL!

Hawaii has the giant African snail...they're scary looking.
I've seen some here also. These giant snails can grow to
be 8 inches / 20 cm long. Yuck!!!

11 Jul, 2009

Oh yuck is the word!

11 Jul, 2009

we used to have 6 incj african snails as pets... soo exciting..lol

Sandra:

I've never heard of a snail as a pet. : > )

11 Jul, 2009

Wow, it's beautiful!

11 Jul, 2009

my kids got board of them so we gave them away. not exactly the most exciting pet...lol

12 Jul, 2009

Tasteyg, thanks...I do think the large ones are very beautiful also.

Sandra, I would think a snail would not make a good pet...hopefully, the new owners don't let them loose...or else...an invasion of large African snails will ensue.
