Thanks Morgana and Clarice - I have two of the parent Cycas revoluta and they are both now having babies (pups). This particular cycas' pup is suddenly taking off.

You might be onto something there Morgana!

Well like rain the leaves take in moisture, so may be the dust feed some nutrients into it.

Fabulous. How tall is the plant Bernieh ?

Sue - from ground level to the top of the 'break' is around 3 metres.

Bernieh:
Don't you just love when they first push their
new fronds out? That's when they are nice and
soft...then they come hard and spiny like a
porcupine...and get you! LOL! As you can tell
I've been bitten/poked by cycads a lot in my
life. : > )

Lol ... know that feeling well. The other cycas is right next to the steps leading up from the courtyard to the driveway - where we walk in and out every day - and trying to keep it trimmed and away from the steps is a nightmare!

Bernieh:
Yes, that's a common practice with cycads -- placing
them outside doors and walkways when they're small,
cute and innocent. lol. Then the fronds grow from
2 - 8 feet / 61cm - 2.2 meter long in a few years...
and then the fronds need to be cut in half...which is
such a shame.

It definitely spoils the look of the fronds - the one above luckily is in a garden bed and allowed to grow freely whereas the other little beauty looks rather stunted and not half as attractive.
