Delonix regia - Royal Poinciana tree

Delonix regia - Royal Poinciana tree (Delonix regia (Acacia Roja))

This tree has a huge circumference! It still has flowers even in September! Lots of monsoonal clouds with severe thunderstorms over the mountains in the background. It also was very hot and extremely humid this day, 105 f (or 40.6 c). Photo taken on September 8, 2024.

Poincianas grow huge here too. They are a very common sight around Townsville and some think of them as a weed!! That's primarily because of the spread of its seeds and the mess that's left when the seedpods drop.

Our here in the foothills I have to admit that I love seeing the colour explode in springtime and summertime, even though they do seem to be taking over the bushland more and more.

Another striking tree, Andy. Loving it's "umbrella " shape.

I love this tree. The shape of it and flowers as well.

Lovely tree, Andy! But I think my seedling's not going to get to that size - ever! In fact I don't think it's going to get past the 2nd true leaf phase! 😥

I asked my son about his & he says its still growing at present. He sowed 4 seeds & only one germinated, I sowed the 2 he gave me & only one germinated! So really I had a better success rate in germination than he did! I got 50% while he only got 25%! 🤣

Bushbernie,

I wish this tree was more common! It’s available in nurseries, but not as common as Cassia species and Tipu trees.

People do love the flowers! But, not the mess, it’s similar to Jacarada trees that grow here by the millions.

Kate,

Yes, it makes a huge umbrella-shaped tree.

Klahanie,

As you know when Royal poinciana is in full bloom, it’s extremely spectacular!

Balcony,

Unfortunately, when a seedling, Delonix regia can be very temperamental. Too little water or too much water can kill them fast. Delonix loves very, very hot temps when they’re germinating, also.

Hi Andy, my seedling has finally died! 😥

I’m so sorry to hear that! 😞

Try Caesalpinia pulcherrima, it’s much hardier and has a similar appearance on a much smaller tree.

Thanks, Andy, for the suggestion.

You’re welcome.

See who else is growing Delonix regia (Acacia Roja).
