They are sort of thistles but there are no spikes on the stems just the tips of the leaves and around the flowers. They do not spread very easily from seed unlike a thistle!

Sorry, this is in fact Eryngium varifolium (Moroccan Sea Holly).

I have one of these and can any one tell me how or if the flower heads seed. I have taken some off and am drying them,,,,, I do know they can be split and cutting taken from the root.....
