There's some very large Australian Banyan trees at the San Diego Zoo. This photo was taken from the Skytram on Nov. 21, 2015.

The large Ficus macrophylla trees were planted at the San Diego Zoo in the 1930's or 40's. Many of these trees have huge aerial roots which have become huge trunks. There's so many aerial roots hanging down from them, also. There's some large ones in Balboa Park which are older and are just over 100 years old.

You've seen the one at Shin Park in Fremont? It was planted in 1874. I posted it on Dave's Garden years ago. I was later told that it was F.m. "columnaris" Maybe. Its taller then wide.

I have photos of the Shin Park Moreton Bay Fig before the December 1990 freeze. It's an impressive tree for Northern California. That tree was most likely purchased at the old California Nursery. I think that's where a lot of the "exotic" plants/trees of the 19th Century came from.

I have two in my side yard. Future Goliath's. They rooted into the ground in 5 gallon pots. I grew them from seed sent from NZ. He collected the figs on Lord Howell Island.
No amount of our cold bothers it.
I have seen them held down Andy...they like the rubber tree can do fine with pruning. I would like to make a rounded 12-15'canopy with banyon roots. These have many wiry roots developing.
I doubt I have to worry about them 30 years from now if you catch my drift. I'm not Methuselah..
