The emerging blooms of the Leatherleaf Mahonia in mid December.
As you can see from the amount of buds it should be a blaze of colour in another couple of weeks

Readily available at most garden centres though people tend to go for the more popular 'Winter sun or 'Charity' which flower in abundance.
The Leatherleaf has, in my opinion, a far superior scent.
It also has an abundance of decorative purple berries in early summer. Mine has doubled in size since March so they are also quite fast growing :o)

I like this - does it tolerate shade? I'm looking for more winter interest in my front garden and like the idea of the berries in summer. Look forward to seeing photos of it in full bloom.

Mahonias are great for the shade.
Mine is planted on a North facing wall and gets just a couple of hours sun in the evenings from Spring to Autumn.
It was a foot high when I bought it in Feb, I pruned the dead flowers off so that it could put its energy into growing rather than producing berries this year and it has doubled in size.
Now it has grown a bit I shall probably leave the berries to ripen this year as they are very decorative.
The leaves are very tough with sharp spikes (hence the name Leatherleaf) so not a good choice around children..

That's very lovely.
Is this easy to acquire or is it a rare type of Mahonia ?
