Thanks Milky and mookins

I've never heard of a Tatarian maple (Acer tataricum) so I've just had a gander on google. Nice tree!
If you want to take a shortcut growing your maple as a bonsai, grow it in the ground for two or three years before transferring to a pot. Doing this will help to thicken the trunk of the tree. Don't prune it heavily during this time.

The odd shaped thing next to the pot is a carpet of lichen that was growing on the surface of the pots soil.
Proves there's no polution as lichen will only grow in clean air.

What else?

See who else is growing Pinus sylvestris (Scots Pine).

See who else has plants in genus Pinus.

This photo is of "Scots Pine" in Stjohntongue's garden
