This Plumeria sent up a bloomstalk. Mind you ,this far north I usually dont get a bloom until July- or later.
THIS, looks like April, beating any previous bloom by months.
So far Feb is averaging 75f or 24C. A vastly warmer average then at any other time in my life. Plus,January ended warm.
Not a good photo..but you get the idea that its warm SOMEPLACE- wink.

Its been cold in Japan too some internet friends say.
I just try to enjoy our warm without the drought guilt. Its not common and its all relative. I know Thorney that its always 80's (28c) in Mexico or Hawaii, so 23C in the bay area is still a chilly day to them!

Stan,
It's so strange! My plumerias have been sending up flower spikes since late December; however, all the leaves are off. The leaves are wanting to grow on some plants, though. This is the earliest I've seen flowers spikes on my Plumerias. The only one which used to flower in winter during hot weather used to be my large Plumeria obtusa 'Singapre'. It could bloom anytime. I need to get another one.

Andy, yesterday I saw them- bloom stalks on the Mango are forming.
The warm is said to ending by next week. But,if it didnt? Will Jacaranda's bloom in April- May here? How many plants will think they are in the subtropics?

It's suppose to cool down here by Sunday. Low 70's lol!
It's going to be cooler Monday and Tuesday and then back to upper 70's and low 80's next Wednesday and not sure when it'll end.
I've seen some flowers on some Jacaranda trees here...it's not too unusual, though. It quite possible Jacarandas will flower there in April and May...my former neighbor's Jacaranda would bloom starting in May, in Mission San Jopse Fremont.

I can do late 70's Stan given half a chance. Minus 4 when I started the car this morning.

Whoa Thorney. It hasn't been since 1998 when we had a -2C morning. In 1990 we did have a -4C. That would pretty much destroy my today yards!..may it never return.
With the arctic tundra going farther north,I think California has moved 400 miles south since 1990. My un scientific estimate. Could be 200 miles..lol.

Stan,
Which variety of Plumeria is the one in the photo?

My old Celadine. It looks like today is the last of a 3 week run of 70's and back to mid 60's. For the first 7 days of February we were averaging a very nice 75f.
Did you see my blog of the young Avocado orchard planted just down the street and to the right behind Moreau High School? So cool to see something like that 3 blocks away.

Your Celadine looks great! I have one in the ground. It wants to start growing soon. I'm going to remove it and put in my mango tree in the ground in the same spot.
I always thought Hayward, Union City and the Fremont hills were the best climate to grow avocados. I still say the best-looking avocados are grown in that area.
All the mid-to-upper-80's temps are gone now here. It's only in the 60's today, which is more typical for this time of year.

There is a story to that Celadine..ha...
It was a gift from Hawaii in the early 90's,a cutting in wax. It grew well until around 1997,the paperboy broke a branch off. So,I just started that in a pot.
In 1998,we had a hard freeze- 28f..and my original Celadine..died. The cutting lived..with some black near the base as I recall.
So I grew it on..it got to be 4x4' with many tips. Around 2009? I thought..it makes it every winter in a pot..plant it.
Only, that winter was cold and wet..and my biggest mistake was to let weeds and grasses cover the base. Rot set ..I lost most of the top growth, all the roots..and it was now a 2' cutting.
Since then,I've re rooted it indoors..and its been outside since.
I might try with other Celadines or Plumeria's..but not this one. Burned once..ha.

If you plant it into the ground use lots of mulch with perlite. You'd be surprised how will it will grow there especially if it's close to an underhang. I grew my Plumeria there in lots of perlite and they grow very well there in Mission San Jose. One year I do remember it flowering in December. Very unusual for up there. It was a Celadine. I know there's a huge Celadine Plumeria (if it's still there in Mission San Jose. I wish I could see if it's still there (not sure where it's located). The owner was pissed when a gardener cut too many branches back. This was back in the late 90's.

They are talking 34f Tuesday morning. The record is 31..the early 70's set most of the February cold records.
Aggravating..usually mid Jan is the death of frost.
I have to hope longer days, shorter nights and urban warming keep frost away.

Our January wasn't too bad either Stan, with things coming alive before their time but February has started out very cold and it looks like it might be the shape of things to come this month.
