I think it may be a prunus of some sort, possibly P. cerrasifera (myrobalan or cherry plum) which flowers in early spring

Funny you should say that, Andrew, I have just been reading the 'Prunus' section in the RHS A-Z and had decided it's P.cerasifera 'Thundercloud'. I shall get two photos on my page now because I am going to add it to 'my Garden'!
