Roystonea regia - Royal Palms

Roystonea regia - Royal Palms (Roystonea regia - Royal Palm)

Here are 4 of the 5 Royal palms which were plants a little over a year ago. They have been growing quite fast considering the horrible dry weather we've had here in San Diego. Photo taken at Balboa Park, Jan. 1, 2018.

Don't they look great in clusters they look very healthy considering your weather being so arid .

They were planted in March of 2017. They grow a lot over the last year. There's a hose there, so they're getting water.

We may be getting a storm starting tomorrow night which should give us some really good rains. This will be the first rain of the season. We're so over due for receiving any rainfall.

That's great they are being well watered .

I hope you do get rain Andy as you say you certainly need it with such a long drought you ve been having over there.

We got a lot of rain today. Almost 2" (51 mm) of rain just today. It was records rains for most cities around San Diego County. I am so, so happy! My rain barrels are full! YAY!!! :>))

That's. brilliant Andy that will save your plants and work watering them . I ve heard it bought mud slides over there to in Santa Barbra.

Yes, we had even more rain than I posted. I was so good since this was the first rains of the rainy season.

It did cause some horrible problems for the burn areas. sadly in Santa Barbara 13 people were killed in mudslides! :>(( . They had a lot more rain up there in a very short period of time.

Yes, we had officially more than 2 1/2 inches (64 mm) of rain here. It's a good start considering this is the first rains of the season. The plants and trees are looking very good! :>)). It's going to get really warm by Friday and Saturday, back up into the 80's F (28ºC).

That's great to hear the plants and trees are responding well and looking good from the rain. Lets hope the heat does nt last to long .

It's still very warm. It's suppose to cool down to the mid-60's (18ºC) by this weekend. It's going to feel really cold! BRR!

Wow! It appears you had quite a major storm a week ago. It looks like it caused a lot of damage in your area.

We very rarely get storms that strong here in San Diego. This year we've only had one rain storm (which is pretty unbelievable!). We definitely need rain here.

It will be up to 90ºF (32ºC) in many areas of San Diego County this weekend and Monday. All next week looks like it will be very warm to hot.

Did I tell you I read somebody has a Royal palm growing well in San Jose? Only he didn't give an address.

26 Jan, 2018

Yes. I looked on Palmtalk and couldn't find the information.

On a different note: I posted a pic of my large Ficus palmeri today. It's located next to a large Magnolia tree so it's a little difficult to see the leaves well.

Me neither. It was just there I think about how they survived Florida's cold snaps..and a guy in Florida who once lived in San Jose mentioned that one palm.I always thought it could be done here. How they look in winter or after a cool winter is the question. But,grow and live I always thought that.

I think Jim in Los Altos has a Roystonea boriquena - Puerto Rican Royal palm. He also has some very beautiful Licuala peltata var. sumawongii. I had a very beautiful one which I brought indoors and it declined very fast. It should only be grown outdoors in semi-shade in a hot spot.

Here's what it used to look like:
