Hi Scotkat, I usually prune mine 6 - 18 inches from the ground in late winter to early spring.

If left unpruned Carole, it can grow up to 10 feet. However, I prune mine (and Cotinus 'Grace' and Buddleia too) down to around ground level in early spring and then it produces large, well coloured foliage, getting up to about 6 feet in height.
