This African Tulip tree at Alcazar Garden in Balboa Park looks terrible. The severe, historic 6 year drought has taken it's toll on this poor tree. It has so much die-back from not receiving enough water. :>(( Photo taken on Aug. 27, 2017.

I wish the park district would cut all the dead growth out of it. If it got water, after being cut back, it would fill out very nicely. I'm doing that with my African Tulip tree.

Perhaps you should phone them and tell them perhaps they have nt the knowledge like most people who work with plants now a days all they care about is getting money in.
I am so plessed your cutting your African Tulip tree back to fill out and with prevent stress to it in the hot dry 0weather.

Actually, it's best for me not to thin out my African Tulip tree now. It can get burned from the sun if it's too thinned out.
I know, I should call them. I called the city several years ago regarding the really tall 100 year old Queen Palms on 6th Ave in Balboa Park. They didn't cut the fronds back and some trees fell down in storms. They said, they didn't have money in the budget for cutting those trees back (it was in 2008 during the financial crisis). I think a lot of other people complained. Because a month later the palm trees got their fronds cut back. It does sometimes work.

Wise choice not to cut your African Tulip if it will burn.
Its the same here Andy if any one suggests any thing they say we jave nt the money yet they can find money to commision hortid art work or other senseless things they is no good to any tax payer who pays for it.
At least they took head of your suggestion eventually just a shame about that the Queen Palms that had fallen.

The Howea looks great in the background.
At the GGP they had the sprinklers on all over. Soaking the tree fern dell.
They pump their own water from a well I read. Hmmmm...

There's another one the same size next to it. For some reason these two Howeas always look amazing! You should see all the very tall Howeas that are dying in Balboa Park, it's extremely sad. Several have been cut down along with very tall old Rhopalostylis, which were dead! I didn't have the heart to post pics of them. The big King Palm grove is dying, also. :>(( We need a lot more rain here in San Diego to erase the severe 6 year drought.
