can anyone help,my forsythia is dying,it has a hole running through the middle of nearly every main branch,i have pruned it back to new growth,but i dont hold out much hope for it

Why not take some cuttings ( best done between November and February), then if the old plant doesn't regenerate you have a youngster to replace it and probably a fair few to swop / share ? :-)

Sounds like a pretty old one. I'd wait until winter and then coppice it - i.e. cut it down to near soil level. It will probably regrow from the stump. All trees/shrubs have a lifespan, think yours might just reached the end of its life, but coppicing can rejuvenate them.
