Rambling roses and petunias are dying off & astibles are not as normal. They are under large branches of a rowan tree which has spread from a neighbours garden, could this be the problem?

I agree with Janey...Astilbe need a moist soil to grow well and your roses and petunia need plenty of light. Definately prune back those branches!

I would say it is Rose4, the tree will be taking all the moisture and goodness from the soil, and it sounds like it may be too shady for them. Keep them well watered and fed and maybe prune the branches back too.
