Try scarifying the lawn to get rid of dead moss and thatch, then hire a lawn aerator with hollow tines, which will take out a core of soil about 6" deep, collect up all the cores, which you can put on your beds and borders, then spread sharp sand all over the lawn, and brush into the holes, this will aid the drainage which will help to prevent the moss returning, at this stage you can treat with a lawn weed and moss killer, when you cut the lawn try to make sure that all the clippings are collected,if your mower does not collect the clippings, give it a good rake, as any left will form a thatch and encourage moss to return, you can treat again in spring with a feed and weed, Derek.

Possibly, but your answer was better! (More work though...)

Like Derek I am not a good typist so this link and it's related links at the foot of the page will more or less concur with Derek & Steragram.

Agree with all the above. The only thing I want to add is if some of the weed is creeping clover (it has long stalks and grow low) is to rake it in different directions before mowing as that brings it up to be cut. If you catch it early enough the creeping stalks are easy to pull up, a bore to get out when established.

Hi Sue, yes it may be more work, but the results should be worth the effort, if a jobs worth doing,, lol Derek.

Spread Weed and Feed in the spring. Using a longer cut on the mower gives the grass a better chance to compete with the moss, and you could also try spiking the lawn to aerate it. (I wish I did this!)
