Why are my Michaelmas Daisies dying?

We have planted some Michaelmas Daisies, however they seem to be dying from the bottom up. They have a kind of white powder on the leaves. Any ideas on why this is happening would be much appreciated.

If it's a Aster novi-belgii this is a very common problem - try Aster novi-anglii, frikartii or amelus, much more resistant.

the powder is a fungal infection called mildew. you should be able to buy a fungcide to treat them at the garden centre.
