Growing in Scotland

I've just seen a nice example of Mexican cigar (cuphea ignea) growing outside near Inverness(Scotland). it survives quite happily but does need a good summer to flower properly. Did you know this?

No, it stays out all year. It's not even against a wall or sheltered at all. Apparantly it grows fine, it's just the flowers are a bit weak unless it's a good year. The owner says it's five years old!!

I have the mexican cigar growing in hanging baskets that dont survive the winter and i live on the south coast!!

I'm amazed, I thought it was barely frost hardy - is it possible whoever has it takes it inside for the winter though?
