what kind of plant is this

This year a good many of the leaves are turning yellow in places. The plant was here when we bought the house so has been in the ground for at least 3 years. How do I treat the discolouration and do I cut off the dead brown leaves at the bottom.

Loooks like a Cordyline - cut off (with sharp scissors, not secateurs, they won't work properly on this) the dead brown leaves as close to the trunk as possible, including the yellow ones. This is probably a result of the drought we had earlier on this year, if you didn't water.
