Hi again Carol.
The most important part to protect is perhaps the top of the crown between the fronds as this is the active growing point. If this has been killed over winter, it's curtains for the whole plant I'm afraid.
This sounds strange but try pouring a can of coke (none diet type) into the crown and see if this starts it off.
It seems to work for many people.

Why do you think that living in Northumberland you get less sunshine than anywhere else. The eastern side of the Pennines gets far less rain than the west. :-)
Anyway, back to topic. Where is the plant situated, is it sheltered? Full sun or planted in a shady area?
Do you water the trunk on a regular basis? Did you give it any winter protection? Do you live coastal or inland?
