Thanks Mookins , does that meen that i can let it keep on flowering but do i have to cut it back regular??
29 Jul, 2009
if you want to keep it, its best to keep it in check but it has a tendancy to get everywhere that includes the lawn (if you have one) i dont know if you have neighbours but it will get there too?
your choice as you say its very pretty but oh boy I think you will have your work cut out
the RHS have some info about it should you decide to get rid

For crying out loud this is an invasive weed get rid of the damned thing!
29 Jul, 2009
EXTERMINATE...EXTERMINATE !!
Paint every tendril and shoot that you don't want with Glyphosphate - or what ever your choice of weedkiller may be.
Otherwise - move house!
It is a lovely LOOKING plant but it is a real thug and I have seen gardens blanketed in it....so watch out!
29 Jul, 2009
PS You won't pull it out either....you will be in dear old Oz before that happens!
Just get the weedkiller going!

Mookins newby or no he/she needs to know this is an invasive weed and needs to be got rid of a.s.a.p.
29 Jul, 2009
I agree with you Moongrower, but sometimes there are more pleasant ways to say things!
29 Jul, 2009
its a 'she' moon grower but thanks 2 every1 4 all of the advice !!!!!!!!!
29 Jul, 2009
Sorry, don't agree... if someone has an invasive weed they need to know - not be told it is a pretty flower!
29 Jul, 2009
yes but they need to know why its invasive, not just told get rid of it?!
after all its their choice
29 Jul, 2009
Mookins we could get into a long and unpleasant discussion here. Bind weed is an invasive native weed, if you would like to give Bethyann a more detailed description of why it is not a good idea to grow in the garden go ahead.
29 Jul, 2009
okay oka every 1 we have discussed that it is a very pretty flower and a very invasive weed , so lets leave it at that !!!!
29 Jul, 2009
I am not here to get into long and unpleasant discussions Moongrower. I am here to learn as are lots of other people. I can imagine you would be able to tell more about the bindweed than I ever could but all Im saying is that there are ways in which to say things.
29 Jul, 2009
Yup I agree! Sorry Bethyann I used to love the flowers of this plant as a child - now I am happy to see in the hedgerows but not in our garden
29 Jul, 2009
okay

Unfortunately if you keep it it will not just affect you. It will easily spread to neighbouring gardens ( if they dont already have it ) and that would be inconsiderate. In my opinion you should get rid of it , as much as you can anyhow because its a hard one to kill off completely. Good luck.

okay Inverglen , much appreshiated ( or however u spell it lol)!!!!!! :D

If you like the flower shape you could consider growing Morning Glory (Ipomea purpurea) which is an annual climber. You can grow it from seed in spring. That plant won't invade in our climate! But get rid of the bindweed first.
Glysophate is sold under the brandname Roundup and a couple of others. If you spray the leaves, just be careful that it doesn't get on any plants nearby that you want to keep. I don't generally bother with weedkiller but bindweed will grow from a tiny bit of root left in the ground so pulling it up is not the best approach. I've got it coming into my garden from a neighbouring car park and I have never managed to completely eradicate it.

And if you are actually only 11, it will be illegal for you to use the weedkillers suggested yourself - you will have to get someone over 18 to do it for you, I'm afraid.
30 Jul, 2009
Thankyou very much , Elleme , for all of that information and thankyou bamboo
30 Jul, 2009
Sorry Bamboo, which statute are you referring to when you say it is illegal for an 11 yr old to use weedkiller. I think you mean it is not recommended, but illegal - not sure about that. A good suggestion on how to get rid of this if it has taken over the garden and is climbing over other plants is not to spray, but mix the solution as instructed and add wall paper paste to the liquid. I would stick some tall canes around the garden and the convulvulus will climb up these then you can use a paint brush to paint on the paste and this will be less harmful to the plants and shrubs you want to keep as the spray weedkillers can sometimes get on those if you are not careful.

Is that a picture of your "ivy" because that is better known as Greater Bindweed or Convolvulus Major and if you stand still long enough beside it - you will be strangled too. It is pretty though!!
