Do i still need to plant my Clematis Miss Bateman below soil level?

Nottingham, United Kingdom

I have been given a Clematis Miss Bateman in the usual type of pot you get in garden centres. The leaves were quite droopy and despite watering and feeding didn`t recover so i cut the stems to compost level. New shoots have appeared about a half inch high. When i plant it will i still need to plant below soil level? Or will this kill it?

I personally would wait until its bigger before you plant this out, Im not a pro but its still at a crucial time at the mo and weather factors could cause it to decline again.

hope somebody can help you

Hey, Steve, I've answered this already on the other site... unless this is the same question from someone completely different;-)

More or less mookins - I'd told him to wait until he'd got a minimum of 4/6 inches topgrowth before planting and to plant it on its side, but at an angle so that the growth appears above the soil on one side of the wide hole.

I'm wondering what size pot it's in - those baby plants they sell in 4 in pots need to be grown on before planting out, while a more mature plant in a 3ltr pot would be ok going straight out I would think........

Good point, Sid.

I though they also don't like thier roots getting hot, so you place a few tiles or stones over them.

You're right Tillia, they do like cool roots, but its not usually an issue because most people have other plants growing around the base, I find, so the soil at the roots is shaded by them anyway.

Thank you everyone for your help.
I will wait a while before i plant it.
It`s about two inches tall now and doing well.
Thanks again.
