Spotted laurel dying back

Plant about 20 years old, multi-stemmed, partial/full shade, regularly pruned (sometimes quite severley) to contain size (about 1.4 m), some leaves wilting and dying, whole stems dying off.

Is it possible it's drought? That would be the simplest explanation. How wet has it been there, is it watered regularly if its dry - is it in the ground or in a pot?
