pheasant duty

We had a pheasant come to the back fence today it called and called for about 1/2 an hour walking up and down like he was looking for someone? My cat watched but went nowhere near. Would it have been looking for young at this time of year?

Male I think, so perhaps as you say he was protecting his females. Sounds like they have more than one. Lovely to watch him so close up.

They are not so pleasant pheasants when you have chased a hundred or so young ones out of the Veg patch.
We did have a mother and eight newish hatched babies wandering around the garden a few weeks ago.

Lucky you having pheasants around the garden. Sadly the only ones I've seen this year have been road casualties :-(

Well thats how I usually see them on the road as I go at 5mph thats why I enjoyed this one so much. It was so noisy.

The gamekeeper was round the back of our garden yesterday morning rounding up the wanderers. They are released in a patch of wood about a mile from us and often come looking round the garden. They were not here this morning, but then, the buzzard was sat on the hedge so perhaps he put them off!

I have never seen a buzzard except over head. Start shooting pheasants soon I suppose I have never understood 'breeding for shooting' I'm afraid.

He was back this afternoon calling for his harem do you think.

I agree, Drc726, I hate to see any animals killed for sport, and pheasants are so pretty.

its possible i guess,Was it a MALE or FEMALE ? i think pheasants can breed twice in a year but usually any young should have matured by now, thats why your not allowed to shoot pheasant until september onwards i think, my guess is its a male jst protecting his terratory & his females. x
