I agree with SBG flowers best on new wood

You tell that to our C. Montana Bilbo it is a thug of the first water and we hack it back on a very regular basis. Right now it is half way over the potting shed roof and as soon as I can stand on a ladder to chop it back I will do so.

I know the feeling MG - ours is growing inside the shed which is brick built and my OH gets very cross about it. I hack mine back every year and it still flowers like mad the following spring.

Yes ours gets inside the potting shed too and we completely removed two of them we just couldn't control.

my 16yr old one died :o( and it had been happy scrambling up through the crab apples and yew.

I'm surprised it wasn't the crab apple a yew that died of strangulation ;-)

Ours died too Sbg in the winter of 2010, but have replaced it this spring. Earlier in the week I tied in all the new growth, scrambling through two trees and over the fence top, fingers crossed therenwill be flowers next spring!
