Can anyone ID this plant?
By Balcony
Cambs, United Kingdom
The small yellow/white flowers grow from plants reminiscent of German Irises. They grow in close packed clumps & are flowering at this time. The leaves are a slight bluish green & are sword shaped. The long green leaves behind the flowers belong to some other plant.

It's Sissyrinchum (not sure the spelling's entirely accurate, can't be bothered to get my book out to check). There's a variegated leaved version called S.' Aunt May' in my photos.

Sisyrinchium striatum :-)

Just looked it up Balcony after Bambo gave us a name - Sisyrinchium striatum is a perenial, evergreen, 1m by 50cm drought tolerant self seeds freely and iis related to the Iris - dont know if that is yours exactly? but its so striking and welcome at this time of year. Thats what I love about the questions find out about so many variations of a plant.

Fractal sorry we posted at the same time! Can you get it in seed Seaburn girl?

:-)

There is a drawback though - the leaves tend to go black in clumps, not very attractive...

i quite like it looks like black grass from a difference :o)
just too lazy to clear it away.

You mean from a distance, Seaburn?! Not to me it doesn't, well, not when I've got my glasses on anyway;-)

I have these - I just pull the black leaves off at the end of the season! Not too bad a job, really - sometimes I pull too hard and a piece of plant falls off - but I've managed to root them, so that's OK too! LOL.
I like 'Aunt May' better than the all-green ones - does anyone agree??
18 Sep, 2009
Yes, 100% - it's the only one I grow or plant anywhere!

Flowering now? Feel confused... we have several but they all finished flowering a while ago - sorry don't think this is the right i.d. And can't do better :-)

Defo sissyrinchum - I've got them just finishing a second flush downstairs now.

Wonder if it the difference in where we live?

Ye, Mg - I have some in flower still! It's definitely the right ID...:-))
19 Sep, 2009
Oh well... I'll just go and look at the 'naked ladies' in our garden :-)

Thank you all for your answers & comments & I've done a search on Google & come up with this one that I think is the plants in question: Pale yellow-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium striatum ) on http://www.shootgardening.co.uk/sitePlant.php?plantid=9461&name=Sisyrinchium%20striatum%20&name=sisyrinchium-striatum-
I've seen the variety "Aunt May" & I agree it looks better than the grey/green one, Spritzhenry.
By the way it's not growing on my balcony but in a big, untidy garden I was helping to tidy up last Tuesday.

Make sure your "Naked Ladies" wrap up warm, MG, as we are in for a few cold nights during the coming week! LOL! :-D
I haven't seen any "Naked Ladies" around here lately! :-(

Colchicums lass :-) One of the few bulbs flowering in our garden right now - along with cyclamen... Oh and no actual 'naked ladies' can't have B's blood pressure going up - giggle, giggle

I do know of a garden that has quite a few of these but as I no longer work at the factory I no longer pass by it going or returning from work.
19 Sep, 2009

I have two types of Colchicum flowering now. One is a double flowered one called 'Waterlily', the other is a singled flowered species. Can't remember which one though?
20 Sep, 2009
I AM going to get some Colchicum...maybe they'll have them at Malvern??
22 Sep, 2009
I've tried looking a couple of times this week for the garden with Naked Ladies that I talked about above but I can't find it in spite of retracing the routes I took going to & from the factory where I used to work. :-(
22 Sep, 2009
Ah well perhaps they got fed up of being cold - lol
22 Sep, 2009
No but I'd like to know what they are
