Daffodils: Will they flower a year after having the leaves cut off too soon?

I want to plant some daffodil bulbs, in a clump on my Mum's grave in Yorkshire. They seem to mow all over the graves, although have a little space adjacent to the headstone. If they are mown off too soon will they come back the following year? She only died a year ago.

By allowing the leaves to die down naturally the bulb benefits from the energy stored in the leaves. By cutting them down early the bulb is denied this feed source and will be weakened. It will probably flower during year two and year three but the quality will be diminished and it will eventually stop flowering. A bulb that is allowed to die down naturaly will go on flowering and getting bigger for years and yearsIn you situation, Mad, I think that I would prepare for planting new bulbs every couple of years.

Personally I don't bother too much about cutting back the foliage on daffodils. As soon as the leaves start looking untidy I give them a good feed of fertilizer and then lop the leaves off at ground level. They always flower the followng year....

I live in a sort of culdesack and we have our owen little green with a huge horsechesnut (nearly said konker treebut it is a mail)which is beutefull in every season, round the base we have crocus and snowdrops the rest of the green is filled with daff's, I was talking to a chap that has lived hear a longe time ,and he said there used to be a lot more daff's but the council used to cut the grass to early, next spring I will be standing guard,I will be taking photoes as soon as I get sorted about puting pictures on hear.

Bulbaholic, thats what I thought but what Chasecraft says is interesting too. Cliffo, I would stand guard if I could. Unfortunately the grave is in Yorkshire and I am in Norfolk.Thank you for your responses. If I am able I will try to go next Spring (it depends on my health. I have Emphysema and am on oxygen for 20 hours a day.) I do have a little trolley for a cylinder, so can get about a bit. She'll know I tried!

Did your mum like crocus? The early chrysanthus varieties will just about have died down before even the Yorkshire council get the mowers out.

Bulbaholic and Andrewr, thank you for those ideas. I may do all three, but I've never tried planting snowdrops except in the green as I thought they may not grow. Worth a try except I won't be there to see them .... She will though.
