Since last year the soil in our north/east facing front garden is covered in a type of greeny blobs, especially in wet weather. They tend to dry up in the sun, but do not disappear. What are they and where do they come from? Photo attached.

Thanks for your replies. I have since discovered that it is a type of algae or mould that grows in wet conditions and poor drainage. Apparently copper sulphate may get rid of it.

It's all very well killing it off but you will have to aerate the soil and provide better drainage otherwise the algae will just come back.

I was thinking that Volunteer, improving the soil and the drainage wouls help the plants too
