startng marsh mallow?

I bought some seeds for the marsh mallow plant at a master gardener's booth at a local fiber fair. How/when do I start the seeds? The pix of the plant look fabulous. I think I have found all I need to know about where to plant but not how or when to start the seeds. (P.S. I live in southwest Indiana.) Thanks anyone!

My book says to "sow seed in open ground in spring, and transfer to final planting positions in autumn", presumably for flowering the following year.
