Broccoli

for the last 2 years i've tried to grow Calabrese and Purple Sprouting broccoli. the Purple Sprouting does grow, but it's not purple, but the problem i have is that the Calabrese won't form heads at all. It's all just leaves. I planted them out in April, and the only thing i can think of is that maybe the soil type is affecting the plant? it's very clay like soil. Anyone have any ideas as to what i can do?
